Victoria "Abdaraya Toya" Montou also known as “Gran Toya” was a midwife, warrior and healer. She trained others in the art of war including Haiti’s founding father, Jean Jacques Dessalines. Montou is believed to have been born in the Kingdom of Dahomey, in present-day Benin. 🇭🇹
January 1, 1804, #Haïti🇭🇹 gained independence after defeating the Napoleonic Armies. By freeing itself from slavery and colonization, Haiti became the world's first black republic and the first independent Caribbean state. ✊🏿🙏🏿🇭🇹
