Hollywood actor Alex Nicol (1916-2001) starred in two Hammer noirs: The House Across the Lake (aka Heat Wave, 1954) and Face the Music (aka The Black Glove, 1955). Neither was a horror, but he did go on to direct his own film in the genre - The Screaming Skull (1958).

On this day in 1960, shooting ended on the Hammer film Sword of Sherwood Forest at Bray - not Bray Studios in England, but Ardmore Studios in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland, where Hammer shot two of their adventures. The second was The Viking Queen (1967).

A triple bill of vintage horror on @TalkingPicsTV late tonight: BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW (1971), CARNIVAL OF SOULS (1962) and THE SCREAMING SKULL (1958), starting midnight (late Tuesday 17/early hours of Wednesday 18 May).

For anyone wondering, Dick's reasons are: He's getting old, and now that most of those who made the original cycle of Hammer horrors are long gone, the magazine has effectively outlived its purpose. Massively grateful that he has persevered this long.
