Animals can turn into fairies & be magical with special powers. Spirits of animals are thought to be able to become fairies & were often believed to be the most primal fairies. In addition to manifesting as animals, fairies used various animals as messengers.

In fairytales, creatures of every kind are as old as literature itself. Animals used in fables & beasts in fairytales are found in ancient Egypt, Greece, India & Aesop. Animals can symbolize the natural world, a deity or sacred entity in various manifestations.

A legend talks about a group of ghostly huntsmen who travel by night & ride large black horses, accompanied by large black dogs with red glowing eyes. Doom or trouble befalls towns where they are spotted. Dogs with seven toes are said to be able to spot ghosts.

In The Dead Moon when the moon shone it was safe to walk the bogs but if she did not, evil things came out. One night moon wore a hood & was caught & held by a night creature. Townsfolk eventually freed the moon & dark, evil things were chased away.

Savory has a reputation as a aphrodisiac. Greek mythical creatures, satyrs (half man, half goat) lived in fields of savory and wore crowns made of the herb making them very passionate. French used savory in love potions.

Bats were thought to be a gift from the devil bestowed upon women who promised their souls to him. If a bat flew into your house on Halloween night, it was thought ghosts were present because ghosts creeping into the home allowed the bats to fly in with them.

It was tradition to leave water out each night for certain fairies or they would drink the blood of those asleep inside the house. Fairies occasionally baked a blood cake & hid it in the house. If the people didn’t find & eat the cake, they would die.

An ancient tradition in England and other parts of Western Europe beekeepers would drape their hives with black fabric if a member of the household passed away. If they didn’t it was believed the bees would die too.
