In the story The Homecoming, by Nigel Kitching and Nigel Dobbyn, the Guardian Robots are introduced- ancient robots from Echidna civilisation, whose designs are directly based on the robots living in Laputa in Castle in the Sky

It's known that Studio Ghibli's first film, Castle in the Sky, was a huge inspiration to Sonic Team, and I plan to make a thread on connection points later- but from Eggmans design, to the notion of an ancient flying island, to it being powered by a crystal, it all ties back here

a very obvious one but sonic 2's death egg robot (designed by Judy Totoya) is inspired by Kunio Okawara's mechanical designs, especially the Scopedog from VOTOMS, and also by the Claw Robot from Casshern (a design Totoya mistakenly thought was Okawara's)
