Shiode has an eyepatch-like mark on his face that I can't decide if it's face-paint or some kind of tattoo.

Not all GCs are mechanites however. Non-mechanite GCs are piloted either by fae, human-sized gigas, the rare human, or mechanites that can't/don't want to go through the effort of transfer.
How easy a GC is to pilot depends on the GC. A license is required to pilot some of them.
