Despite some controversy (see 'Sea of Glory' by @natphilbrick), it is thought that on 19 January 1840, USS Vincennes of the U.S. Exploring Expedition became the first U.S. naval vessel to reach Antarctica. She is depicted here in Disappointment Bay.

HMS Erebus, a Hecla-class bomb vessel famous for her participation in the ill-fated Franklin Expedition, was launched on 7 June 1826. Abandoned by her crew in 1848 after becoming icebound, the sunken wreck was discovered in September 2014. #history #onthisday #history #erebus

During the Great Northern War, a Danish squadron met the Swedish flotilla at the Naval Battle of Fernham on 24 April 1715. It was a victory for the Danes who captured five of the six Swedish ships at a cost of 65 dead and 224 wounded. #history #OnThisDay #navalhistory
