@Stabbyness o, i know this thread sorta ended but i wanted to show one last thing i do for my game,
I have this little system were i give my player a blank map, and as they explore and draw on it, i flesh out the map and make a new one!

@Stabbyness and i didn't really explore this as much as i should have, but im trying to add more unique monsters/animals to the world, like the bugs and mushroom people in the caverns
