Our 'J' entry for @ICELibrary 's #TransportAZ is the jet engine!
Frank Whittle presented his paper on the jet engine @IMechE in 1945. We have this painting of him testing the engine, though we hope a lot of artistic licence was used / that is not a ground floor window.

For #ArchiveZ this week we are looking at the letter P. Did you know that we hold a collection of paintings? Our collection includes this painting (oil on canvas) of Frank Whittle's development of the jet engine. See more here: https://t.co/AaanA4hxoY
This week for #ArchiveZ we are considering the letter F. We present a sample of some of the magnificent (and perhaps, unexpected) “flying” machines depicted in our collections, including the “Flying Hamburger” train, the Inverness flying boat and the Oehmichen flying balloon.
This week's #ArchiveZ letter is E and we have chosen to highlight...engines. We hold material on steam engines, internal combustion engines, model engines and more! Check out the collection gallery on our Virtual Archive dedicated entirely to engines: https://t.co/jVV5syqZua?
Thought folding bikes were recent? Think again! This illustration shows the fantastic folding Excelsior tricycle manufactured by Bayliss, Thomas and Co. of Coventry in 1884. #WorldBicycleDay
