Jaxon and Zuri both have beads in their hair.
First off, I'll clear that they're siblings. The beads are a familial thing. When humans migrated from the surface they underwent a lot of hardships. Many families started wearing these beads as a sort of (1/2)

More info on the comic. The monstrous bird creatures, called Fukeren, work similarly to a hivemind - having a "queen" equivalent (though I imagine this creature to have no gender). She rules their actions.
Currently, the name of the "queen" is Jovogel
