When Shiori became a Cygen she fell into a coma for unknown reasons. Unable to be woken up she slept in that state for many years until someone found a way to awaken her. These events play out in the OVA later on.

Cygens are encouraged to give up their old lives as they are no longer human. In the case of Freya she has a daughter and a husband who she hasn't seen since becoming one. It is somewhat ironic that she originally became a singer to provide for her family a bit sad to.
