Beep beep. It's the birthday of the Irish romantic Francis Danby (1793-1861). Danby gets lumped in with John Martin and J.M.W Turner. Same period. Same throbbing. But he was nuttier than the other two. More apocalyptic. If Game of Thrones had been around he would have watched it.

You obviously haven't heard of Tomma Abts? You need to get out more, and see more shows!

There's plenty of abstract art that I admire ands rate. You're obviously not familiar with my work.

SON: Mum, is it too early to send Christmas Cards?
MUM: No son. This year we need to think early. Send good cheer.
SON: Where can I get the best cards?
LITTLE SISTER: I know, I know! Those funny sheep cards you get from ZCZ. They're right here. https://t.co/S0DRPYh51Q
MUM: Cool!

- Darling, what do you want for Christmas?
- Can I have anything?
- Yes.
- In that case, I'd love some of those funky expressionist Christmas cards ZCZ films are selling because the BBC won't commission any films from Waldy.
- OK. Where are they?
- Here. https://t.co/S0DRPYh51Q

Not real Leonardos. Approximations - at best! The horse one bears a superficial resemblance to Leonardo's lost Battle of Anghiari (left). The second looks a tiny bit like the Benois Madonna (right).

Beep beep. It's the birthday of the best Italian Futurist Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916). Why best? 1/ Top left is 'Dynamism of a Soccer Player' - a football picture! 2/ Top right is one of the 20th century's key sculptures. 3/ All Boccioni's work has a psychological dimension.

As is focusing on I Claudius in next week, I wonder if she knows this series of paintings of Messalina by Toulouse-Lautrec? They were the last things he painted as a rambling alcoholic in Bordeaux, fascinated by the sexual obsession of Ancient Rome.

A lament. Today is the day the Russian painter Zinaida Serebiakova (1884-1967) died. Before yesterday, I'd never heard of her. But someone tweeted, and I thank them for it. Fabulous self-portraits. Gently insistent. And look at that bath scene! A blade of grass with a fire in it.
