Subaru points out what some people thought since her introduction, from her weird tonal shifts to her general attitude around him: it's all infantile and artificial, a carefully crafted mask crafted from her observations of others, in order to create the "perfect" girl.

He recognized his objectification & pushing his feelings onto her was wrong in his self-awareness arc last season; Roswaal now challenges this newly-formed, healthier relationship by creating these circumstances to force Emilia into dependence & Subaru back into his hero complex.

One of the things I appreciate about this arc is how it nailed the aftermaths of Subaru's death, like him instinctively checking for his missing eye, or hesitating to comfort Emilia. But what's significant about this scene is how he relapses into his old habits regarding Emilia.
