Atari's terrific Tempest coin-op is 40 years old this month. Featuring super-fast, bright and colorful vector graphics, this psychedelic tube shooter featured a rotary paddle controller that players used to battle a myriad of abstract enemies. A stone cold classic of its era!
Discovered the existence of this 1952 book series today. I'd love to play a video game based on this!
Salamander (AKA Life Force) celebrates its 35th anniversary this month. Konami's coin-op sequel to Nemesis (AKA Gradius) features six alternating horizontally and vertically scrolling shoot 'em up levels packed with enemies and bosses. Definitely a very fun and challenging game!
35 years ago this month, the ZZAP! team dished out two Gold Medals - one for Bounder and another for The Eidolon. Fight Night and Revs also received Sizzler ratings. Other notable games reviewed this month included Rambo and Commando - though both received only moderate scores.
30 years ago this week, I received Thunder Force III for review on Mega Drive. This keenly anticipated shooter did not disappoint. It featured spectacular graphics and music, terrific effects, and top-of-the-line shooting action. I rated the "state of the art" game a massive 95%!
25 years ago, after months of endless hype, this much-anticipated game finally arrived at the Mean Machines office for review. And lo! There was much celebration and rejoicing. For it was good.
