This work is my continued exploration of landscape painting combined with my interest in ancient history, mythology and science fiction. Thank you for looking!
"Ancient Unknown Sotofish”, Artistic Type. Mysterious spraypaint detritus and art scraps highlighted with a Cubic Zirconia Tooth. I smile when I see this one! #DailySotofish

“Proud Purring Sotofish”, Generative Type. These are not true generative/AI art, rather it is art created and then filtered through various online AI filters. This one was first drawn by myself and my two kids then tweaked multiple times. #DailySotofish

My process varies, but in general I train GAN networks on my existing paintings (online or uploaded) and tell the network to use the "style of Jeff Soto”. The results have been amazingly fascinating- good, bad, boring, interesting!
Though many artists are creating and exhibiting GAN artwork, I found that I struggled with the idea of claiming these newly generated images as my own. GAN is a tool that generates imagery based on online visual sources. Is it art? It sure looks like art.
As a traditional painter I found it incredibly fascinating to ‘create' these new images. The playful randomness is like a contemporary form of the surrealist game Exquisite Corpse or books in which you can flip pages individually to create new animals. GAN art is incredibly fun!
