Did the chef become a great artist? He is decent. What he learned best is how to talk about art, how to look at art, how to be comfortable liking art. His favorite type of art was romanticism, for example Caspar David Friedrich. I hope wherever he is, that he is drawing.
I'm not a great cook, but I am decent. My family didn't have much of a food culture. Single Mom. Latchkey kids. I will always be grateful for even the basics this chef taught me. Favorites being what a roux is and to never put a burner on the highest setting unless boiling water.
In my 20's, I taught a professional chef how to draw. In exchange he taught me how to cook. His recipes & techniques are scribbled in old sketchbooks. He and I became so close he officiated my wedding. Then he got a nose job and moved to Korea. The end.
