Wishing my Irish friends, wherever you are I’m the world, a very happy St Patrick’s Day, with this quartet of influential Irish writers in the field of Gothic fiction: Charles Maturin, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Oscar Wilde, and Bram Stoker. #Melmoth #Carmilla #DorianGray #Dracula
Fifty years ago today, filming began on Hammer’s final Egyptological thriller, BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY’S TOMB. Despite a production schedule marred by illness and tragedy, it’s engaging, atmospheric, and the only effective screen adaptation of Bram Stoker’s THE JEWEL OF SEVEN STARS.
As tonight provides us with not only a ‘Wolf Moon’ but also the first (prenumbral) lunar eclipse of the new decade, it seems entirely appropriate that I should be spending today prepping for my lecture, next Friday, on lunar lore in ancient Egypt for @petriefriends. #Egypt #Gods
The @britishmuseum’s TROY: MYTH & REALITY is their most thrilling, beautiful, and, frankly, moving exhibition since their glorious SUNKEN CITIES. The constantly changing narrative foregrounds, as it should, the reception to these fundamental - and timely - ancient tales. See it!
Just a few beautiful images from the redisplay of the Egyptian collection in @NtlMuseumsScot. It was a splendid launch night; @eloquentpeasant and @DanPotterEgypt should be very proud of their sterling efforts. The galleries open to the public 8/2/19 - go and see for yourselves!
To wish you all a very merry Christmas here's Ronald Searle's evocative title card to my favourite festive film.
