Since sprites act more like cel shaded drawings than paintings, they require a lot more colors if they want that extra detail. Especially for things like diffuse and ambient occlusion in the artistic sense.

This technique a leans more into pallette modding, or palmodding for short. Where sprite artists index their colors, so they can recolor them with ease. (3/n)
