150 years ago #OnThisDay Prussian forces began shelling Paris to try and end the siege and Franco-Prussian War. Over the next 3 weeks, around 12,000 shells were fired on the city and its 2 million residents, held under siege since 19 September 1870.

150 years ago, 4 Aug 1870, battle of Wissembourg saw the first French defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. The @SF_Siege memorial unveiled 1909 gave French Alsatians a site for remembrance. It was destroyed in 1940, rebuilt 1960. #FrancoPrussianWar150 #150ans1870 #Krieg1870
