According to the production secretary, Giger had trucks filled with bones and skeletons of all types delivered to the set. He then began sculpting with the bones, and Styrofoam. The egg chamber set was almost entirely constructed with bones.
The Hieroglyphs were never seen in the final cut, as many other elements of the planetoid surface like the pyramid were too expensive to construct and shoot. Sculpting the space jockey with Plasticine, fiberglass and bones.
