I just tried it again and it looked even better this time. I think I’ll try shading this way at least for a bit and see if it makes my values look better. Sorry for using badge sketches as my guinea pigs lol

Step 1: Flat colors
Step 2: Add white bg layer if needed. Duplicate flats layer, slide brightness up to make it all white. Hide flats colors. Set new white layer to multiply & shade
Step 3: New clipping mask set to Color; add hues of interest.
Step 4: Add highlight layer
