also, of course you don't NEED a fleshed out background to have good character illustrations. some of the principles of basic graphic design and backgrounds coincide! a lot of my ZZZ work relies on simple yet non-intrusive bg elements that aren't structural
however, wider shots like these (which are still very character focused) need to make a bit more sense so that the viewer has better context of what's happening in the frame. a lot more planning has to be done to make comps like this make sense and read well
if you notice: stuff like this doesn't even have the ground visible, so you don't ever need to pay attention to the full structure of the buildings/horizon. the importance here is that i'm placing the subjects optimally in front of the structures/sky/clouds in an aesthetic way
