Whether it’s through the myth of Phoenix, the Birth of Venus, blooming, Minecraft or laboratory procedures, the concept of “birth” or “rebirth” is the most prominent theme on the film. Gaga uses all kinds of symbolisms in order to visualize her rise back to power and control.

Gaga is referencing the Greek myth of Phoenix, a bird that rises from its ashes. The castle could be a reference to the Born This Way Ball castle, the stage she used for her tour. The people who bring her up to life are the artists she surrounds herself with and share her vision.

G.U.Y. (track #3 on ARTPOP) was released as the 3rd single from the album back in March 2014. Lyrically and thematically the song was written as a feminist anthem and suggests that the concept of “submission” is not an act of weakness, but really an act of control and power.
