Toy Story 3 was originally going to have a different plot. Buzz had a malfunction so Andy sent Buzz back to Japan to get fixed. Turns out all the Buzz Lightyear toys have been recalled, and Buzz was about to be crushed. It’s up to Woody and the gang to save Buzz going to Japan
