The Medieval sport of Hawking, or Falconry, was one of the most popular forms of Hunting among the upper classes including the royal family in the 11th century. Since Canute grew up frail and sickly, it was probably one of the few sports he could participate in during his youth.

A lot of anime viewers who didn't read the manga asked on forums and YT "Has Canute lost his sense of compassion?" Giving Canute this scene with Thorfinn showed that he isn't suddenly ruthless and cynical after E18, but more complex, a really good choice.
