12 - Wall!
The cell wall protects a bacterium and is mostly responsible for its shape. Penicillin is an antibiotic that interferes with cell wall construction enzymes and causes the cell to lyse. #Microber2021
Plus a little Bloodstain fanart based on the Streaking prompt. 100% sure Vlad is a microbiology disaster, @ContamClub would feature so much of his mess! @LindaSejic s webtoon Bloodstain is fantastic with some chaotic scientists!
11 - Streaking!
When bacteria are treated with lysozyme and penicillin, they can go into an L-form state in which they don’t have a cell wall.
This is a cheap joke and I know it but I could not help myself. I giggled while making it. #microber2021
9 - Niche!
The Pokémon Paras and Parasect are inspired by a scientific phenomenon - the zombie ant fungus!
I often find that the most intense niches are parasites and symbioses that require a specific other species in order to proliferate.
Enjoy this zombie!
Day 8 - Quorum Sensing!
Quorum sensing is a system in which bacteria recognize that there are a lot or very few of them around - and have a response to that.
The Pokémon Chinchou and Lanturn are based on deep-sea fish with a symbiosis with bioluminescent bacteria.
Day 6 - Phage!
It’s a happy fairylight phage because it’s getting darker outside 🎃

Day 6 - Sporulation!
Some species of bacteria form spores that can remain dormant for a long time and germinate when conditions are favourable. This is a little Streptomyces Tangela that's making some Streptomyces style spore chains! #Microber2021
A little scientist pikachu to cheer you up! He is not very good at it :( Thanks @cgroughton for the suggestion!
A few other BLAST conference examples. You can hire me to make art of the (keynote) lectures in your conference to make it extra special! https://t.co/ogXMive7uZ
@StephEdusei @ElversonJo Thanks for the tag Steph! :) I am a science artist and I make comics! This is a little example of a recent comic piece, but I can play around with style a bit depending on what works for you.
