Unlike I think most people who've seen it, I've seen the original Tekkaman and seeing how blade updates from the original both in story and look I think is really cool and different, but still feels like it has the spirit of the original deep down.
If I rated 0083 with other gundam animes, It's a very strong 8/10 for me much like the other UC Gundam side stories. It's not one of the peaks, but it's just solid all around with some great elements of it.
Easily one of my favs and I'd never thought I'd say that
I've always really liked the MS in 0083, My favorites one being the GP series, the Neue Ziel, and the Gerbera tetra. While it's not my favorite MS roster, all the designs really pop and are great.
Combine all of this and Kawamoto's character designs, 0083 looks fantastic
There was many things I did notice on this re-watch, but the big one for me was Ryosuke Takahashi's involvement in 0083. He wrote episodes 8-11 and that means he's responsible for the Nuke Launch scene that gato pulls.
Knowing that makes that scene even better
One other thing I love about Dragonar are the Metal armors. Okawara was at his A-game in the 80s and this for me is right up with his best work in just how cool they are and how they gel with the setting.
They're similar to MS but the Jet aspect to them is what stands out
The show definitely has a similar set up to 0079 to give it some familiar, but by the half way point when the gun jem squad shows up, the show not reveals it's true self it's also when the show really started to pick up and really shine into what it is.
Dragonar holds some significance to me as it was one of my first Sunrise mech shows that caught my eye alongside Layzner, Dunbine, King gainer, L-Gaim, and Brain powerd.
It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel like those did, but it makes up for it in many other aspects
Happy 35th anniversary to Metal Armor Dragonar.
From Takayuki Kanda(Dougram, Vifam, Gundam 08th MS Team) with designs by Kunio Okawara and music by Toshiyuki Watanabe.
Though not an all time time classic, It's very fun and rock solid show that makes it one of my favorites
