The partners they start their journey with are not their first Pokémon. They gifted each other their starters shortly before the story. Mina always wanted a Zorua and in return got Froakie for her, its water-dark typing represented their friendship

Ga’o and @Vextreus’s Agni were the partners of two champions… but were also best friends who slouched around together from time to time. Sometimes the big guys liked a nap (Ga’o especially)
