And as for The Sanctum of Self, where the Yellow creatures reside, we wanted a wild, ancient, jungle type of feeling. So the creatures were mostly exotic birds and insects, with a few reptiles for good measure.

For the FrightFrost area, it was sort of tricky, because we needed creatures that felt like they were adapted to the cold, but others that belonged to an underwater area. So… Penguins and fish!

For instance, the creatures who live in DinoLand need to be adapted to a hot, tropical climate prone to volcanic eruptions. So, creature-wise, we aimed for lizards, dinosaurs and other creatures that looked tough.

As such, we refocused our attention onto imagery from the 80s and 90s, as a call back to our childhoods, and the games we played growing up, such as Paper Mario and Zelda. So, we got inspired by 80s toys…

Nostalgia as a Moodboard

So, in recreating the game’s aesthetic, we also needed to address one of the basic themes of the #artstyle: Nostalgia. While the original 1930 cartoon was culturally nostalgic, we eventually realised it wasn’t nostalgic to *us*

So, I’ll go first, my contribution to the Rainbow Billy “Draw This in Your Style” challenge! I’ve been working in this game for over 2 years now, and i’m having some feelings about it, so i guess i couldn’t help but draw a vulnerable, emotional kind of Billy…
