Posting this fairy procession by an unknown artist for no other reason but that it makes me smile (especially that toad/frog in the little chariot).

The Lady of the Lake is often represented as evil in medieval literature but in 'Le Morte d'Arthur' she has a very good reason to entrap Merlin under a rock. He has fallen in love with her and will not leave her alone.

My favourite Cornish tale is that of The Mermaid of Zennor. A mysterious woman who never seems to age enchants everyone with her voice. She falls in love with Mathey Trewella, the best singer of the Parish. They were never seen again on dry land. 🧜‍♀️💙

In The Little Mermaid by Andersen, the prince falls in love with someone else. When they marry the mermaid will turn into sea foam. Her sisters give her a dagger. If she stabs the newlyweds she will have a long life in the sea. She doesn't.

In 'The Singing, Springing Lark' a father orders the servants to catch a lark for his daughter. When one is caught a lion appears and accuses them of theft. They must pay with their lives or bring back the first thing that they meet - the father's daughter.

The Nisse from Scandinavian folklore is associated with the winter solstice and Christmas. They live on farms and will punish farmers who are lazy or disrespectful. In more recent times they deliver gifts. They're very fond of porridge with butter! 😋

According to some Scandinavian folktales witches could create 'troll cats' from human hair and nails. It's said that they looked like a ball, a rabbit, a hare or a regular cat. They stole milk and cream and brought it back to the witch that had created them.
