As a child I found Hauff's fairytale 'das kalte Herz' (the cold heart) rather terrifying. Set in the Black Forest it features Peter Munk (not happy with being poor), the Glasmännchen (on the side of light) and the ginormous Holländermichel (on the side of dark) #FairyTaleTuesday

I especially love her skull/bone paintings

@JenniSpangler1 @AmusedNonQueen well, also possible that mermaid depictions are wrong (I've long suspected that) Depictions mostly seem to conform to whichevercentury's fashionable swoon look, but what if they were far compact, their skin more furry, and underneath were layers of blubber?
