Many reptilian species in Mario's world have very distinctive biological features, the most notable of which is their bulbous snouts and round cheeks. These are just a few examples of the aesthetic similarities.

It's a well-known fact that Mario was named after the late Mario Segale, but its a lesser known fact that Mario's girlfriend Pauline was named after the now ex-wife of Nintendo's warehouse manager, whose name was Polly James.

There was a pitch by Archie Comics to Nintendo to create a comic series based on the Super Mario games, similar to Archie's Sonic and Mega Man runs. It would have been written by Ian Flynn, who now writes the IDW Sonic comics.

Sadly, Nintendo's Japanese office turned it down.

Despite the series' all-ages demographic, Mario characters do drink alcohol. Princess Peach and Bowser drink champagne in Super Mario Kart and Wario will stumble drunkenly when an enemy throws beer in Wario Land II. Both of these only occur in the japanese releases.

Princess Peach's Castle has seen several design alterations over the years. Despite this lack of consistency, the roof of the castle has almost always been some shade of red.

Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed in an interview that Super Mario Bros. 3 was a stage play. However, seeing as how recurring antagonists the Koopalings were introduced in this game first, this appears to be a stage rendition of an actual adventure that took place.
