A fantastically detailed @NASAHubble image of M101, the Pinwheel Galaxy. The galaxy is about 21 million light-years away. In 2011 a Type Ia supernova was discovered in this galaxy.
The stunningly complex planetary nebula in this @NASAHubble image is NGC 5189. Planetary nebulae are formed near end of life of Sun-like star. The star becomes a red giant which ejects its envelope, and the exposed hot core irradiated the ejecta. NGC 5189 is 1,800 light-years away.
"The Rose" -- one of the most spectacular @NASAHubble images -- the interacting galaxies Arp 273. The larger galaxy (UGC 1810) is tidally distorted, and has young blue stars in clusters. Arp 273 is about 300 million light years away.
A fantastic @NASAHubble image of the amazing galaxy NGC 6946, also known as the "Fireworks Galaxy." During the last century ten supernova explosions have been observed in this galaxy. The galaxy is 25.2 million light-years away.
TODAY, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 26, at 4:15PM Italy time, I'll have a conversation with @sandrasavaglio on "Galileo and the Science Deniers" at the Festival della Scienza Roma : https://t.co/St6HDRaFlO
A fantastic wide-field view of the Orion Nebula (Messier 42). The nebula is about 1350 light-years from Earth. The image was taken with the VISTA infrared survey telescope at @ESO ’s Paranal Observatory in Chile.
This spectacular image of the Orion Nebula star-forming region was obtained from multiple exposures using the HAWK-I infrared camera on @ESO ’s Very Large Telescope. This is the deepest view of this region and it reveals more very faint planetary-mass objects than expected.
Today is February 15. #OTD (or the 16th, according to some sources) in 1564 GALILEO GALILEI was born. He said that he did not think “that the same God who has given us our senses, reason, and intelligence wished us to abandon their use.”
