The game Vectorman (1995) used a new Sega Genesis programming technique known as Vector Piece Animation. Vectorman's body actually consisted of 23 individual sprites programmed to move in unison.

For those wondering: Sakurai wanted Kirby to be pink, and Miyamoto wanted him to be yellow. Pink (obviously) won out in the end, but games with multiple Kirbys almost always feature a yellow Kirby as well.
