Tbh I feel the artwork Yoji Shinkawa did for MGS1 was his best

Fun fact, the Raiden Ride Armor has been used the longest in the Megaman X series, appearing in Megaman X4, X5, X6, and a second model appearing in X7

X's original design was modeled for the game as well, maybe the new design was added after the armors were both already designed

Interestingly enough, X's armors in Command Mission look more like his original design instead of his design in Command Mission
