Fun Fact: Revolutionary Girl Utena and Sophitia from Soul Calibur were both looked at as inspiration for Betsy’s Captain Britain look.
@Astral_Dork There was one anthology story where she discussed it a bit. For her the butterfly is control.
Thinking about the Betsy of Earth-X who trained with Merlin and Roma and was constantly engulfed in a psychic energy butterfly.
You know in those sitcoms you have the two in the friend group who can’t stand each other and are always sniping only for them to realize they’re madly in love? That’s them. https://t.co/E54mVgqLzQ
This shot of her all energized is so pretty and she knows her power can destroy the world.
Wasn’t super sold on this at the time but Betsy sending out multiple butterflies for communication is a neat trick. Almost like an upgrade of how she would project her astral form.
It’s interesting that in Excalibur her autonomy was challenged in different ways. She found herself at the whim of the higher ups in Otherworld to do what they want. Knowing that she is now accountable to only herself is thrilling. Her story possibilities are endless.
It makes the story in XOS and post all the more heartbreaking. After finally managing to get herself back in a way that she could control it was taken away again by Saturnyne and her friends. Shattered and put into a new body made from her. Still, she takes it all in stride.
Betsy’s battle with autonomy and her body was always a major staple of her comics career. Constantly finding herself in situations where people manipulated her or tried to be her she always fought to maintain herself.
