The book reflects one of the high points of the so-called Harlem Renaissance, that flowering of African American literature and culture in the public’s consciousness. Folk art communicated as blues, jazz, and dance, resonated in a young Covarrubias who was there to portray it.
His most famous waltz is Sobre las olas 🌊 (Over the waves), composed in 1888. This piece was so popular in Europe that for some time it was incorrectly attributed to Johann Strauss II. Perhaps the next time you hear a waltz, you’ll think about Mexico instead of Austria!
Originally published as a series of newspaper articles 🗞️ for the Metropolitan Magazine, the book Insurgent Mexico became one of the most vivid testimonies of this revolutionary upheaval.
