Obviously the design is inspired by the stereotype of famous bodybuilders (Including the crest that mimics a very popular hairstyle among them), the evolutionary stages of Machop suggest the passage of a fighter in training until becoming a god
Alakazam Family (#063-#065)
The three members in this family are based on the stereotypes of people whit extrasensory perception or clairvoyance with aspects of witchcraft symbols, like baphomet, foxes and others
Toed in other hand, seems to be based on the Frog king, a character in a lot of asiatic fairy tales (Mostly chinese) who comands and rules over other frogs.
The curly hair on it's head looks to be inspired by the way japanese represent water waves on old art
Wrath and Toed share some of this, but also.
Wrath is maybe inspired by the japanese folk tale of the "two frogs"
That is about 2 frogs that fight each other after discussing about wich town is better (Kyoto and Osaka)

This family had various origins.
Let's start whit Wag and Whirl
Their designs are based on the Japanese Glass Frog tadpole, this species of frog have transparent skin, so, their internal viscera is visible, in the tadpoles look like this

In most of the asian myths there are giant guardian dogs with lion/tiger similarities, like the Komainu/Shisa (Japan) the fire breathing Xiezhi (China) or the Haetae (Korea)
Golduck Family (054,055)
It's belived that when you have constant headaches and migraines is because a third eye (Or inner eye) is emerging.
The third eye refers to the gate that leads to inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness in dharmic spiritual traditions
The Bakeneko is a cat who had lives more than 100 years (Do not confuse with the nekomata)
It becomes more inteligent, but also, selfish and sometimes evil and hard to tame adding it to it new supernatural abilities

In Japan there are a lot of mytical creatures and legends around cats.
This family take 2 of them.
The Maneki Neko is about a cat that bring good luck and wealth to it's owner.
It's color and pose in the Maneki neko change the kind of luck it brings

This family is based in design and behavior on the classic arcade of Whac-a-mole, whit some aspects of real life Moles (In Digglet) and the myth of triplets sharing one mind (Dugtrio)
