In 1952, a vesicular disease outbreak among swine prevented their entry at the State Fair. The Museum’s own 𝘋𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘩𝘺𝘶𝘴 (19 MYO) measuring in at 6 ft at the shoulder and nearly 12 ft long was awarded the 1952 Grand Champion Purple ribbon! #FossilFriday
This Giant Bone-crushing dog lived 8-12 mill years ago. The "Epicyon haydeni" species discovered @ Ashfall Fossil Beds stood 2.5 ft at the shoulder & weighed +200 lbs. Many skeletal features = more similar to modern hyaenas than modern dogs & wolves. #FossilFriday #NationalDogDay
Recently, Brian Brodrick donated a mammoth lower jaw to the State Museum. This juvenile individual was approximately 3-5 years old when it died based on the teeth preserved in the jaw. This one-million-year-old specimen was found in south-central Nebraska. #FossilFriday
In 1905, this ~20myo partial skeleton of Syndyoceras = collected in W Neb. It's ~2.5 ft tall w/ horns orig covered by keratinous sheath like antelope today. EH Barbour named the species "Syndyoceras cooki" to honor its discoverer Harold Cook. Illust.: Mark Marcuson #FossilFriday
