#WhenIWasTen
I took ballet
I loved to sing and I wanted
to learn to play the guitar
when I was ten
I had no idea
that I would ever need an abortion
let alone
when I was ten.
And I didn't. I didn't.
Thank Fate, I didn't.
But it was luck, not righteousness.
When I was ten.

and Charlotte's Web
and I knew how babies were made
but only theoretically
I baked cookies with my mom
and made up silly stories
with my best friend
when I was ten
I knew fathers got drunk sometimes
and had to go live in another house
3/
hang laundry on the line
feed the cats
carry a latchkey
when I was ten
I knew grownups aren't
always to be trusted
and I was a Girl Scout
we learned how to make firestarters
from rags for camping
when I was ten
I loved fairy tales
(still do)

#WhenIWasTen
I loved reading alone
up in a big tree
or in our living room
I'd sprawl on the carpet
next to my mom
knowing
she'd tell me a word
if I didn't know it
she always knew it
when I was ten
I could cook a dinner
embroider a flower
