And speaking about manga, there's this super underrated Chinese manhua artist/illustrator, Zao Dao.
She mainly does one-shots, drawing from Chinese supernatural folklore. Her works are both vibrant and dark, whimsical and eerie, rich and atmospheric.
Golden Kamuy by Noda Satoru
A bloody treasure hunt in Hokkaido involving the Russo-Japanese War veterans and the indigenous Ainu people. Like Dorohedoro, this manga features unhinged but very compelling and likable characters, along with irreverent graphic humour. Also F O O D!
Witch Hat Atelier by Shirahama Kamome
A story about a young girl who studies magic to break the curse she accidentally put on her mum. Magic school, magic items, creatures, dark magic conspiracies, oh my! Especially great for fans of CLAMP, Studio Ghibli, Tweeny Witches
Drifting Dragons/Kuutei Dragons by Kuwabara Taku
It's about one of the last dragon hunting crews, almost an allegory to whaling. It touches on the ethics of such hunting but the bigger focus is given to F O O D. Lots of airships/flying scenes, great for Miyazaki/Nausicaa fan.
