I wonder if the pop culture image of the octopus as a symbol of coldly alien evil will fade the more we come to learn about octopuses as intelligent, friendly & even playful beings.
Like a lot of Gen X kids, my introduction to the worlds of Tolkien & epic fantasy was the Rankin-Bass animated Hobbit movie, which means that my first Bilbo Baggins was Orson Bean. I thank him for that wonderful gift & wish him godspeed on the greatest adventure of them all.
I feel like we don't appreciate the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy nearly enough. It's the best recent example of filmmakers revisiting a beloved but dated property with smarts & love for the material to create something really special. And all three films were good to great!
Since we've seen this last decade how incredibly difficult it is to conclude a long-running fantasy/sci-fi saga, can we give a shout-out to the one that absolutely and triumphantly stuck the landing?
Hey Warner Bros., if you can give Todd Phillips a Joker movie...how about asking Marielle Heller to take on Superman? Talk about a director who can make goodness and decency feel as mysterious and exciting as other filmmakers think evil is.
I've watched the Peter Jackson LOTR films a kajillion times & love them, but this is still my favorite scene of all time to ever appear in a fantasy film.
