The illustrations in Pilze Der Heimat, by Emil Doerstling, are set in nature - complete with a couple of little creatures who've come for a munch.
I haven't seen much mycological illustration like this, where the setting is so alive.
Does brown actually look different if you're German, compared to if you're French?
See, for example, Agaricus crassipes / Agaricus fusipes (synonymous?)

L'oignon de loup ~ Wolf's onion
An example of a vernacular name Paulet recorded which doesn't seem to have passed into modern usage, sadly.

First thing to say about 'Mushroom Miscellany' is... this is a great-looking book. A real feast for the eyes.
Stunning photos are interspersed with gorgeous vintage illustrations.
