Today is the anniversary of the birth of Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863), the leading artist of the Romantic movement in France.

Known for painting historical subjects on a grand scale, his compositions are highly charged, full of colour, dramatic movement and emotion.

Our Work of the Day is from our Drawn from Nature exhibition.

Artist Lydia Shackleton (1828-1914) studied at Dublin Metropolitan School of Art before establishing a Quaker school in Lucan. In 1884, she became the first artist-in-residence at @NBGGlasnevin.

Our Work of the Day is a recent addition to our collection, Sir John Lavery's Her First Communion (1902), which was purchased with the support of the Friends of the Gallery in 2018.

The subject of the portrait is Lavery's nine year old daughter Eileen.

Our Objects of the Day are these delicate watercolour illustrations by Elizabeth Corbet Yeats (who was also known as Lolly). They are from her 1896 painting manual, Brush Work, a copy of which is in our library. It was produced to teach children how to use watercolour techniques!

Inspired by #NationalDrawingDay (coming up this Saturday!) our Work of the Day is a drawing by the beloved Irish artist Harry Clarke, called The Travelling Companion.

Who's excited to watch Normal People? ✋

Today's Work of the Day is a portrait of award-winning Irish filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson, who has directed six episodes of the adaptation of Sally Rooney's novel. The portrait is by artist Donal Teskey, and was commissioned in 2018.

Filmmaker @lennyabrahamson was with us this day last week for the unveiling of his portrait by @Donald_Teskey. His film The Little Stranger was released in Ireland this weekend, and it's really good - elegant, atmospheric and haunting. If you haven't seen it yet, make a plan!
