So in other words, I was an idiot who had no idea how shading worked and who ended up choosing the wrong colour to shade with

Here's a quick before and after on the thing, I used the same palette for the most part, the only thing I did end up changing was the darkness of the shirt

The previous version of the more grown up looking avatar ended up being slightly on the uncanny valley with the facial proportions
