‘Omai’s defiant and proud gaze makes him fearlessly himself.’

Really enjoyed this article - it takes a close look at Joshua Reynold’s Portrait of Omai (c1776): https://t.co/WBLwA9W0ft

Such a striking portrait that encompasses so many complicated themes.

Some very clean lines in this nineteenth century woodcut showing the William IV Gate at the entrance to the Royal Pavilion Estate. Part of the collections at the British Museum.

Have just found out that the Chain Pier at Brighton had a camera obscura for at least part of the nineteenth century. It must have revealed some amazing panoramas and views of the seafront!

Here’s Robert Bruce’s watercolour of Bodiam Castle from our collections. Built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, it was restored in the late 19th century and donated to the National Trust in 1925. In 1987, Enya filmed the video for ‘The Celts’ at the site.

This rather lovely early 20th century postcard shows the Winter Garden at the Metropole Hotel, Brighton.

The building was designed by the architect Alfred Waterhouse, who also worked on University College London and the Natural History Museum, London.

Hot ginger bread sounds rather nice.

Can we tempt you with anything from this menu?

It’s from a Banquet held at the Royal Pavilion for Grand Duke Nicolas of Russia on 18 January 1817.
