Naughty heralds?
Randle Holme wrote (1688) about the increscent when used as a charge: “but the modern Heralds generally make a face in it”... (The Academy of Armory, B2, p.22)
I’ve seen hundreds of early modern arms, but never came across with increscent with a face in it.
Arms from “The XII Worshipfull Companies, or Misteries of London... An[no] 1609”. Also given the names of Kings of Arms who granted these arms.
London Metropolitan Archives, MS 2077. #heraldry
