What is a Metroidvania?
It's a game genre where you need a double-jump to fully enjoy the game but you start without it.
Eventually you'll find the double-jump and the sheer relief of acquiring it will make you think the game is great.
You also will double jump ALL the time.

People praise Magic The Gathering as a complex, deep strategic game but agro mono red "red deck wins" type of decks are easier to pilot than any Hearthstone face hunter or zoolock.

Obviously game journalists will defend easy modes since this make their life easier and legitimize the way they play the game, in great part because it's a faster way to finish a game.
Not saying those modes are good or bad, but the journalists clearly have a dog in the fight.
