If you don't want to change values, you can also change hues to define form.
Usually these are used in tandem, but if you find you always adjust value to add form- try playing around with hue as well ^_^ Here is a 10 minute sketch up of that.

I wouldn't mind reincorporating some of the loose brushwork back into my art but the confidence i feel in my ability to render any pose or scene with characters is.... leaps and bounds beyond what it was.
