The gharial specimens we studied both showed nasal septum deviation, but to very different degrees. Comparing nasal septum thickness in gharials to other crocodylians, it was pretty clear that gharials sacrificed septum width to make room for everything else in their snouts.
(4/end) In the case of gharials, bowing of the nasal septum was not uniform but instead formed a series of waves that alternated between each airway. In some instances, the waves are minor and it’s not a big deal. In others, the deviation can be extreme and does impede breathing.
