Visited a certified banger this morning. Michelangelo’s Laurentian Library; I’ve been before but struck this time by its wonderful materiality, the grey pietra serena, which Michelangelo described as edible, offset against incredibly roughly plastered walls. Good as it gets.

The refurbishment of Warham St Mary, N Norfolk (with box pews & triple decker pulpit, still there satisfyingly) included relighting the windows with a wonderful fragmentary mixture of local & continental stained glass, all mixed up like a scrap book.

First weekend test driving the new for Wiltshire, especially good on Lydiard Tregoze, a humdinger of a church in suburban Swindon, crammed full of monuments to the St Johns - including a remarkable painted family portrait, a tender alabaster, & a swaggering gold lad.
